Chapter 5: When Things Get Really Interesting
Concrete Experience
This week was challenging for me, and I was quite nervous. On the day of deployment, I arrived early to avoid heavy traffic and waited for my co-interns so we could go to the office as a group following our scheduled orientation. When we arrived, we were warmly greeted by Ma'am Aarnn, who oriented us on the office rules, the events we'd be assisting with, and also asked about our class schedules. After the orientation, we socialized with our fellow interns from the STI College Tourism Management program and helped them to prepare the souvenirs to be given for the delegates arriving the following day. Just as we were about to leave, Sir Droy arrived. We had a brief conversation where he invited us to the event the next day at the City Mayor's Office, Kastifun Hall. He advised us to wear business casual attire for the event and also discussed other upcoming events, including Batang Pinoy in October and Paskuhan sa Gensan in December.
On Friday, September 26, 2025, we arrived early since we had been assigned a task that needed that day. After finishing the task, we prepared ourselves so we could proceed to the venue, where we helped facilitate and waited for the delegates to arrive. We met people of different nationalities and greeted and welcomed them warmly. After the event we went back to the office and were informed that there would be no work in the afternoon and advised us to go to the Veranza mall and observe the event in celebration of Tourism Month.
Reflective Observation
This week taught me a lot. I noticed arriving early helped me feel calm and prepared and managed my time wisely so that I am able to do my task and also give time to myself to rest. I realized the importance of effective communication, particularly asking for clarification to clarify things up to avoid misunderstanding and mistakes.
Abstract Conceptualization
This week’s experience reflects Role Theory, which states that people act according to the expectations tied to their roles. As an intern, I learned to be punctual, cooperative, and professional by following office rules and doing my tasks. The orientation and guidance from my supervisors clarified these expectations, allowing me to adjust and better fulfill my role.
Future Application
I also want to improve my interpersonal skills by practicing more confident and professional communication. I want to learn how to say my thoughts clearly, listen well to others, and handle conversations politely and calmly. This will help me work better with people and build good relationships.
